Logical Training Advice

Logical Training Advice

MMA, Strength Training, BodyBuilding & Strongman

My name is Paul Marsland and I come from Liverpool in England. I've been training since I was 17 and I've made my fair share of training mistakes along the way but through these experiences I've learned a great deal about how to train effeciently and effectively for maximum results. This site is to help share that information in the hope that I might be able to help others from making the same mistakes and save years on ineffecient training programs or canned routines.

The people whom I consider to have had the most influence on me are:

Mike Mentzer

www.mikementzer.com

I consider Mentzer to be my original mentor and I'm still a huge fan of his work, although I don't agree with everything he has written, I have many of his books, courses DVD's, Videos and an even an audio tape set.

Brian Johnston

http://www.exercisecertification.com/

Brian Jonstson has been the most supportive and influential not only in how I train www.zone-training.net but more importantly, how I think about exercise and it's underlying principles.

Over the years I've written articles on the subject of weight training and my experiences with it, here are just a few.

High Intensity Thinking Parts I & II, Many thanks for Juan Lancaster for encouraging me to write a follow up and for publishing it

In this article I discuss in detail my training and the changes I've made, nothing is left unturned and its my most frank and honest article to date.

High Intensity Terms (http://www.geocities.com/ultimateironfitness/_hipm.html)

I wrote this article some years ago and although my views have changed somewhat I still believe it holds valuable information on the principles of exercise science and High Intensity Training . The artwork was provided by very good friend Mark Collins, the guy in the middle of the photograph.

Contradiction in Terms (this was published in the IART exercise science annual Synergy 2003)

See here: http://www.exercisecertification.com/books/Library/synergy%202003/synergy%202003.html

This is what I consider to be my best article to date, in it I challenge Charles Staley and his thought and principles regarding training including how the concept of intensity and how its viewed in regards to exercise.

I've also contributed and featured in the second edition of the Zone Training Book available from the International Association of Resistance Trainers website.

See here http://www.zone-training.net/success/Marsland/marsland.html

You can also read many of my thoughts, views and discussion on varoius topics on the subject of exercise science, althougth the board has not been active for a while it still serves as view point in how my thinking has changed over the years and there are some excellent discussion from which many people can learn.

Tap Out is my favourite brand of MMA clothing.

Bushido, the way of the Warrior

. I've trained using a variety of methods and principles and some have been very productive, some of my personal favorites are:

  • Power Factor Training or Strong Range Partials.
  • Slow Reps 10 seconds up, 10 seconds down
  • Negative Only or Negative Acentuated.
  • J-Reps or Zone Training

Jreps or zone training is without doubt  the best method of training i've used in terms of increasing my size, even at an advanced stage of development. I'm also training on strongman equipement from time to time. I also favour slow reps as there is something unique about lifting in this manner.

My main foucs now is strength training and Mixed Martial Arts, as I've wanted a new challenge for some time as I'd grown bored of bodybuilding, as realistically I felt I'd gone as far as I could. So my training is now a mix of strength training using a wide variety of methods and principles, conditiining work and working on my BBJ and Kick Boxing skills.

Here are some videos of me training strongman: www.youtube.com/marso70
